When seasoned dog rescuer Ermioni Giannakou first saw Odysseus she wondered how did this small dog find food and water for so long?
“Odysseus broke my heart…the minute I saw him, there on the streets, sick and alone. It took me only a few minutes to understand that he is blind, and a few more minutes to realize he is deaf. One of his eyes is missing, we don’t know what happened to him, the other eye is blind.”
Despite his lack of sight and hearing it still took Ermioni several hours to catch him because he was so scared he kept running away and he went into a decrepit, dangerous building.
But finally she managed to grab his collar and get him to her car without him biting her.
“He had a collar around his neck which says that once he was an owner’s dog,” Ermioni wrote. “He didn’t have a microchip and no one looked for him, not via the police, not via the local vets, not via social media or our organization.”
Given Odysseus’ age (estimated to be around 15 years old), he will stay with Ermioni at DAR Animal Rescue. “He is staying under my care and will remain with me as it is not easy to find adoption for such an elderly dog plus deaf and blind.” But she promised to make sure he has everything he needs to have a quality of life.
And when you see his transformation from when he is first rescued, to what he looks like now, you know that’s a promise Ermioni has kept.
