A couple visiting South Africa was about to wrap up their journey in the most amazing way. They recently visited Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest city and the capital, and decided to do a safari tour in the Kruger National Park to finish off their journey. The four and a half hour drive to get there didn’t feel like much as they were in a new country and all they could think about was what they were going to be seeing; elephants, giraffes, spring buck, and much more.

Everything seemed to be going according to what they were anticipating from the research they had done prior to their trip, and then there it was. A leopard in the grass and it was hungry. It wasn’t hard to interpret this because a moment or two after spotting this rare animal, they noticed a porcupine who had come running out of a hole. The fight was on.

Typically leopards stalk their prey and approach as close as possible before pouncing; killing their prey by suffocation.  However, in this scenario, the leopard wasn’t able to get anywhere near it’s breakfast because the smart porcupine had no intention of becoming anyone’s meal that day.

Let’s take a moment to recognize that porcupines and leopards are nocturnal, meaning typically they are active at night and awake during the day. In addition, leopards don’t usually waste their time on this type of rodent; likely because of what may ensue as you’ll see here.

Don’t take my word though, watch for yourself as this porcupine wards off the fierce leopard not once, twice, but multiple times. It changes directions, goes for a bit of a walk, even tries just being still. Eventually, the leopard goes across the dirt road and just stares at its prey, hoping to catch it off guard. They weren’t about to get that lucky though.
