David was motorbiking down an empty motorway when he spotted an emaciated dog by the side of the road. The dog was skin and bones and on her last legs.
“I don’t have the heart to leave her. I was gonna leave buy I don’t have the heart,” he says in a video of her rescue. “She’s too thin. I’ll see what I can do.”
He had no way of transporting her and there were no cars around so he waited an hour for someone to stop and help. David and his partner Valentina promised the dog they would do what they could.
But “Sandy” was in very poor shape. Not only had she been overbred, she was diagnosed with Leishmaniasis, which can affect skin, weight and organs. Vets recommended that the couple put Sandy down because her treatment would be expensive and she may relapse. But Valentina and David were willing to do anything for Sandy.
As they helped Sandy recover, they rescued a puppy and noticed Sandy’s entire demeanour change. She got her spark back and she began to heal. David says of Sandy’s remarkable recovery, “Love can move mountains.”
