A dog left chained to a vacant home in Missouri after her owner was murdered chewed off her own paw to escape the tether.
Treya spent five years chained under the deck of an abandoned home in St Louis as neighbors fed her and gave her hay to keep warm in the winter.
Earlier this year, the chain became tightly wound around Treya’s foot, and it was so painful, that she chewed off her own foot to free herself.
Neighbors called authorities, who contacted animal shelter Stray Rescue to take Treya in and rehabilitate her.

It is unknown why the neighbors did not call authorities when they first found the dog, or earlier than five years after Treya’s owner’s death.
Along with her missing paw, Treya suffered from heartworm and a severe skin infection, Stray Rescue founder Randy Grim told the St Louis Post-Dispatch.
Grim said that after spending so many years alone, Treya feared human interaction. But now, she’s receiving a second chance at life.
Treya now lives with a foster family who is trying to socialize her with other dogs.
She’s being treated for heartworm and her skin infection, and the shelter is raising money to purchase the pooch a prosthetic limb.

Her treatment, along with the prosthetic could cost up to $3,000.
‘Her emotional wounds matched the intensity of her costly physical ones. The thought of chewing off a limb just to survive haunts all of us at Stray Rescue,’ Grim told KDSK.
‘She’s a beautiful, wonderful dog [so] for her to get this second chance at life without chains, a life with people, a life with other dogs and hopefully – down the road – a life with a leg: what more can you ask for?’ Grim said.
Grim said that he hopes residents won’t hesitate to call in the future if they see an animal in need of help.
