Our hearts really go out to dogs when they are abandoned. Sometimes, they have to live by themselves for years on the streets or in a shelter. At other times, there is a bright future ahead of them.
Kai is just such a dog, and his situation was so troubling that he made the national news in the UK. According to STV News, he was found in a train station just after Christmas, tied to a suitcase full of his belongings.
The dog was helpless because he couldn’t move further than a few feet from the suitcase. Fortunately, the Scottish SPCA got involved, took them in, and began caring for him.
They got a few things out of the suitcase, including toys, a pillow, food, and a water bowl. They also began to recognize that the dog had a medical condition and felt that his former owner abused him.
They learned a little about him because he was microchipped. They knew his name and some other information, but nobody is sure who abandoned the dog at the train station.
If they figure it out, the former owners will likely find out why you should not abandon dogs. Not only is it a crime against animals, but it’s also illegal in Scotland.
The former owner of Kai that had him microchipped had sold the dog in 2013. He doesn’t know what happened to him or how to contact the buyer.
It seems as if that buyer then tried to sell the dog to a woman a few years later. He met up with her at the Ayre Station and was asking 400 pounds for the dog, according to CNN.
Things didn’t quite seem right, and she said when she went to buy the dog, the guy rushed out with a food chest and lead on the dog. She could see that the dog was skinny.
After telling him that she wanted to take the dog for a walk, he said he wanted 150 pounds as a deposit in case she didn’t return. She then saw him speeding off in his car and told him to come back for his dog.
The woman started panicking. Her daughter had asthma and had to get home, so she left the pup behind after tying him up next to the suitcase. She told a staff member that the dog wasn’t hers and left.
Unfortunately, the dog needed surgery, and it would cost thousands of dollars. The SPCA was able to put together a drive that paid for the surgery. Within 24 hours, 2,500 British pounds were donated by people across the community.
After Kai started recovering, she began to do well. More than 100 people called to offer her a home, but eventually, they went with Ian Russell, a 52-year-old man who is a hydraulic engineer.
He was heartbroken because his dalmatian had passed away recently. Kai was able to fill the void. These days, Ian and Kai are inseparable. They share a special bond and are looking forward to many happy times together.
