Bull Moose Sends Opponent Tumbling Down Hill, Pins Him To The Pavement In Rut Battle For The Ages
This is the best part about living in the middle of nowhere, you can come across something incredible like this right on the road. And this right here, a once in a lifetime type of moose encounter.
Moose are the largest members of the deer family, reaching weights over 1,500 pounds in some places and then can stand as tall as 7 feet at the shoulder. Seeing a creature that large do anything is special, but seeing something that big in a battle with something the same size is a downright incredible occurrence. You couldn’t draw it up any better.
Moose battle it out during the rut, or breeding season. Each year they grow massive paddle-shaped antlers off their heads that are used as a symbol of dominance and for a battle weapon. It’s almost hard to imagine two beasts this large fighting like knights in the Middle Ages, but it happens all across the world every fall.
While driving down a road this fella came across something insane (and the linemen working on the road got a show as well).
The two giant bull moose start a battle. They are both massive, pushing each other back and forth until one gets the upper hand and drives the other down the hill. He goes tumbling down and winds up on the road, and the other hurries down behind him and pins him to the ground.
I thought he was done for there… it’s hard to tell if he was gored or punctured, but it looks like those brow tines are buried in its belly. But then, buddy on the ground gets back up and doesn’t miss a beat, right back to fighting.
The moose stumble around, each taking a spill on the pavement at some point. Neither has any quit in them, and the one getting whooped on starts to turn the tables, driving the other back up the hill.
That is a battle for the ages and something I hope to see next time I’m driving down the road.
