The video of pitbull-terrier mix Electra being left at Inland Valley Humane Society, in California, earlier this month has been viewed by nearly 330,000 people – some of whom have been left in tears by her story.

Electra’s tragic facial expressions have gone viral after the clip was shared on Facebook by animal activist Lolys Menchaka – as the pooch realises her owners aren’t coming back.
The four-year-old is far from the only dog to be abandoned in this way, but has become an unwitting face for the sadness and reality of shelter life for many dogs.

“Sometimes I would like to understand owners surrendering their animals.
“I don’t like to judge them but when you see how the dogs come to the receiving department with their happy faces and they stand all proud I just can’t understand..”
One commenter wrote: “Her sad eyes made my heart hurt”.
While another said: “This kills me. Those eyes. She’s so scared. The wagging tail. She’s still wants to give love. Dogs are so selfless.”
Happily, Electra was adopted by new owners – who spotted her on social media, and fell in love with the dog.
