This is the gruesome moment a pride of lions ambush a pregnant wildebeest who makes a fatal error in running away from her pack.
In the footage, a pride of lions charge at a herd of wildebeest, who turn and make a dash for it in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve in North West Province, South Africa
Tarryn Rae, 32, who has been a field guide in the reserve for almost five years said: ‘I set out with guests on a 5:30am game-drive. Part of the excitement is driving through the gate and never knowing what is going to happen.
‘I often tell my guests that with as far as game drives go, it is all about being in the right place at the right time mixed in with a little bit of luck.
‘The herd headed of wildebeest got closer to a hill and had no clue what was waiting for them on the other side.
In the gruesome video one of the lionesses fed on the baby wildebeest (pictured) after they had caught the mother
When the lions ambushed the herd, one of the pregnant female wildebeests ran the opposite way, on her own, and was hunted by the gang of hungry big cats
‘The herd turned and ran for their lives, one made a fatal mistake, she ran towards the lioness.
Eight lions in total fed on the animal. Above, six lions attack the wildebeest before two cubs join them
Tarryn Rae, 32, said: ‘One can’t help but have a rash of emotion whilst watching something like this, but at the same time, you realise how privileged you are to witness the power of these big cats’
‘Once they brought her to the ground it was game over. Around three minutes is all it took from the chase to the kill being completed.
