Baby elephant rescued after being trapped in deep reservoir for 48 hours as 17 members of herd stood guard

Some of the group even broke off to forage for food which let rescuers had to shoo them away and use digger break down walls and save three trapped animals

A baby elephant was one of three animals stranded after falling into a reservoir, but despite efforts of locals the trio couldn’t be rescued for 48 hours.

They were surrounded by 17 other Asian elephants standing guard to protect them, so rescuers couldn’t get near without fear of being attacked.

But with just a few bananas to keep them 14 of the herd went off to the nearby forest to forage for food.

As soon as they did 60 police officers moved in and set off sun grenades and firecrackers to drive the remaining three elephants away.

An excavator was then brought in to break down one of the walls, and let the water drain away.

Police footage of the rescue operation shows the animals at first frightened by the loud mechanical digger, but after officials left the area the elephants eventually left the reservoir and returned to the forest and their herd.
