A heroic pet dog saved a newborn’s life after the child was found abandoned in front of a couple’s house in Thailand.
In the early hours of Aug. 9, Pong, the canine, began growling while pacing back and forth sniffing at a package while it was raining.
Nong Khai province resident Phuwiang Intawong, 55, tried to ignore the noisy hound and go back to sleep but, finally, went outside with her husband at 5 a.m. to see what all the noise was about.
The pair noticed Pong barking at a mysterious black bag on the other side of their garden wall. Upon opening the bag, they were shocked to find a baby girl wrapped in a pink towel and covered in a white, waxy substance with the umbilical cord still attached. Although the baby had some trouble breathing, she was still alive.
“I was so surprised there was a baby there,” Ms. Intawong said. “I want to know why the person left her at my house.”
Ms. Intawong alerted Pong’s owner, police Sub-Lieutenant Sommart Kunlanet, who lives across from their house and allows his pooches to wander on the road at night.
Nong Khai police officers and officials from the Hin Ngom Sub-district Administrative Organization were also called to the spot for assistance.
They said the “cute and fair-skinned baby girl,” weighed 7 pounds (approx. 3.2 kilograms) and had all her external organs intact. She had been covered in vernix—a white, creamy layer that coats babies inside the womb.
Staff said the girl was healthy and was taken to the Nong Khai Hospital for further monitoring.
According to Mr. Kunlanet, the baby was out of danger and was being cared for by nurses.
“It was thanks to Pong that the baby was saved,” he said. “He doesn’t bark for no reason. … Had he not alerted us, no one would have known and come to the baby’s aid.”
